We are in a War for Our Minds
Written Aug 26, 2023 by Jane Perkins, MS, LCPC, LPC-S
In today’s busy world, we often feel unhappy or dissatisfied with life. One reason for these feelings could be how we talk to ourselves in our minds. As Christians, we can use a powerful tool: speaking truth to ourselves instead of just listening to our thoughts. By changing our self-talk with Biblical principles, we can experience more peace and joy.
The Impact of Self-Talk
The thoughts we have affect how we feel, act, and see life. If we only listen to negative thoughts, doubts, and fears, they stop us from experiencing the full, happy life Jesus promises. The way we talk to ourselves shapes our lives in big ways.
Biblical Insights on the Mind
The Bible teaches us a lot about the power of our thoughts and how we can change them. In Romans 12:2, the Bible says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This means we can change how we think by focusing on God’s truth and speaking His promises to ourselves.
Speaking Truth to Ourselves
As Christians, we have access to the truth of God’s Word. Instead of just listening to our thoughts, we can speak God’s truth over ourselves. For example, when we feel doubt, we can say Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” When we feel afraid, we can say 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Replacing Lies with God’s Truth
Listening to ourselves can sometimes lead us to believe lies, compare ourselves to others, or follow the world’s standards of success. But 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” When we replace negative thoughts with God’s truth, we create room for His peace and joy in our lives.
The Role of Gratitude
Gratitude fights unhappiness. Instead of listening to complaints and negative thoughts, we can focus on being thankful. Philippians 4:8 tells us to think about whatever is “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy.” Practicing gratitude can change our mindset and make us happier.
Conclusion
Talking to ourselves with truth, instead of just listening to our thoughts, helps us find more joy and peace. As Christians, we can use God’s Word to guide our thoughts. By replacing lies with God’s truth, focusing on gratitude, and aligning our thoughts with Biblical principles, we can have a renewed mind and a heart filled with peace and happiness.
