We often hear the term “spiritual warfare,” but what does it mean? Spiritual warfare is not about casting dramatic spells or engaging in physical battles with unseen forces. Instead, it is the ongoing conflict between God and Satan, good and evil, that plays out in the unseen realm and significantly impacts our daily lives. If you are a Christian, you are automatically enlisted in this battle. You were made in God’s image, making you a target.
The Reality of the Conflict
The Bible makes it clear: we have an enemy. Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” This isn’t a metaphor. Satan, the enemy, is a real being, and he opposes God’s plans. His primary goal? To steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He wants to disrupt your relationship with God and prevent you from living the abundant life Jesus promised.
Mental Health and the Spiritual Battle
This spiritual battleground often overlaps with mental health struggles. Satan uses tactics like fear, worry, and false beliefs to control and dictate people’s lives. These weapons can manifest as:
- Fear: He twists natural caution into paralyzing anxiety, making you afraid to step out in faith or pursue God’s calling.
- Worry: He bombards your mind with “what ifs,” creating a cycle of anxiety that robs you of peace and keeps your focus on yourself instead of God.
- False Beliefs: He whispers lies about your identity, your worth, and God’s character, leading you down paths of self-doubt, despair, and ultimately, destruction. You get caught up in the idolatry of what this world offers, believing that money, success, or relationships will truly satisfy you.
These attacks can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re already dealing with depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges. You might feel like you’re fighting a losing battle, trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and emotions.
How Christian Therapists Approach Spiritual Health
Christian therapists understand this spiritual dimension. They don’t dismiss mental health struggles as only spiritual, nor do they ignore the spiritual aspects. They integrate sound psychological principles with biblical truth, recognizing that healing often involves addressing both the mind and the spirit.
Here’s how they might approach it:
- Acknowledge the Spiritual: They recognize that spiritual warfare is real and can exacerbate mental health issues.
- Discernment: They help you discern between symptoms arising from a chemical imbalance, past trauma, or spiritual attack.
- Biblical Truth: They use the Bible as a source of truth and guidance, helping you replace lies with God’s promises.
- Prayer and Spiritual Practices: They encourage prayer, worship, and other spiritual disciplines as essential tools for overcoming the enemy’s influence.
- Deliverance and Freedom: In some cases, they may address the need for deliverance from demonic oppression, always with discernment and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Hope and the Path to Peace
But here’s the crucial truth: you are not alone, and you are not powerless. Jesus has already won the victory over Satan (Colossians 2:15). You have access to the same power that raised Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20). Living a life of purpose and experiencing true peace of mind is only found in Jesus.
Here’s how you can find hope and victory:
- Recognize the Enemy’s Tactics: Understanding how Satan operates helps you stand firm against his attacks.
- Put on the Armor of God: Ephesians 6:13-18 describes the spiritual armor God provides: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. Use these tools daily!
- Renew Your Mind: Replace lies with God’s truth (Romans 12:2). Saturate yourself in Scripture.
- Resist the Devil: James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
- Seek Support: Don’t fight this battle alone. Connect with a local Bible-believing church. Find a mentor.
- Find a Christian Counselor: A Christian counselor can provide guidance, support, and tools.

“Jane helped me to face my emotions of grief” – John B.
Losing my wife was the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. I am a christian and believe in God but, I still struggled. Jane helped me to face my emotions of grief while she encouraged me to invite God to stand right next to me. Her guidance helped me with the grief in a way that kept my wife’s memory alive but also strengthened my relationship with God. The free consultation was good. It was the first step and I’m glad I signed up for counseling.
“Zeroed in on my issues…yet treated me with the utmost respect ” – David S.
Jane is awesome! I’ve had several therapists in my lifetime, all of them good, but she is by far the best. She zeroed in on my issues, kept my feet held to the fire with accountability, yet treated me with the utmost respect that is befitting a Christian ministering to a Christian. I highly recommend her counseling ministry to anyone!
