In today’s world, “self-esteem” is highly valued. We’re often told that feeling good about ourselves is the key to happiness and success. But as Christians, how do we reconcile this idea with biblical teachings? Does the Bible support the pursuit of self-esteem?

The Pitfalls of Self-Focus

The modern concept of self-esteem often centers on self-worth derived from personal achievements, abilities, and external validation. This focus on the self can inadvertently shift our attention away from God, potentially leading to several issues:

  • Pride and Self-Centeredness: When our self-esteem is rooted in our accomplishments, we may become prideful and self-centered. The Bible warns against pride, stating in Proverbs 16:5, “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord.”
  • Unstable Identity: Basing our worth on fluctuating factors like success or appearance can lead to an unstable identity. When we fail or face criticism, our self-esteem can plummet.
  • Neglecting God’s Sovereignty: A strong focus on self-esteem can imply that we are the masters of our destiny, minimizing our dependence on God’s grace and sovereignty.

God’s View of Our Worth

The Bible offers a different perspective on worth. It teaches that our value is not based on what we do, but on who we are in Christ. Consider these points:

  • Created in God’s Image: Genesis 1:27 tells us we are created in God’s image. This inherently gives us dignity and worth.
  • Loved by God: John 3:16 proclaims God’s great love for us. He values us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for us. This is the ultimate demonstration of our worth.
  • Chosen by God: 1 Peter 2:9 states, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” God chooses us for a purpose.
  • Redeemed and Forgiven: Ephesians 1:7 tells us, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” Our worth is not based on our sinlessness, but on God’s grace and forgiveness.

Finding True Worth in Christ

Rather than seeking self-esteem, the Bible encourages us to find our worth and identity in Christ. This involves:

  • Humility: Recognizing our dependence on God and acknowledging that any good in us comes from Him (Philippians 2:3-4).
  • Focus on God: Shifting our attention from ourselves to God, His character, and His purposes for our lives.
  • Obedience: Living by God’s Word, not to earn His love, but as a response to His grace.
  • Serving Others: Following Jesus’ example of self-sacrifice and love by serving others (Matthew 20:28).

Christian Counseling Techniques

Christian counselors can help individuals move from a self-focused perspective to a God-centered one by:

  • Identifying False Beliefs: Helping clients identify lies they believe about themselves and replace them with biblical truth.
  • Reframing Thoughts: Guiding clients to reframe negative self-talk in light of God’s love and acceptance.
  • Exploring God’s Purpose: Assisting clients in discovering their unique gifts and calling within God’s plan.
  • Building a Support System: Encouraging clients to connect with a Christian community for support and accountability.
  • Practicing Gratitude: Helping clients cultivate a grateful heart, focusing on God’s blessings rather than their perceived shortcomings.

The Bible doesn’t negate the idea that we should value ourselves, but reframes it. Our worth is not found in ourselves but in our relationship with God. By focusing on Christ, we can experience a deep and lasting sense of worth that transcends the fleeting nature of self-esteem. Contact a Christian counselor who can provide valuable support in this journey, helping individuals find their true identity and worth in the eyes of their Creator.
