In today’s world, “self-esteem” is highly valued.
We’re often told that feeling good about ourselves is the key to happiness and success. But as Christians, how do we reconcile this idea with biblical teachings? Does the Bible support the pursuit of self-esteem?
The Pitfalls of Self-Focus
The modern concept of self-esteem often centers on self-worth derived from personal achievements, abilities, and external validation. This focus on the self can inadvertently shift our attention away from God, potentially leading to several issues:
Pride and Self-Centeredness: When our self-esteem is rooted in our own accomplishments, we become prideful and self-centered. The Bible warns against pride, stating in Proverbs 16:5, “Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord.” This leads towards an unstable Identity. Basing our worth on fluctuating factors like success or appearance can lead to an unstable identity. When we fail or face criticism, our self-esteem can plummet. A strong focus on self-esteem can imply that we are the masters of our own destiny, minimizing our dependence on God’s grace and sovereignty.
God’s View of Our Worth
The Bible offers a different perspective on worth. It teaches that our value is not based on what we do, but on who we are in Christ. Consider these points:
Your Identity is in Christ. You are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), which gives you inherent dignity and worth and deeply loved by God, as demonstrated in John 3:16, so valued that He gave His Son for your redemption. You are also chosen by Him for a divine purpose (1 Peter 2:9), called out of darkness into His marvelous light. And through the blood of Christ, you are redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7), not because of your perfection, but because of His grace. Your past or your struggles don’t measure your worth, but by the truth of who you are in Christ.
Finding True Worth in Christ
Instead of chasing a fleeting self-esteem, the Bible invites us to discover our true worth and identity in Christ securely. This profound reorientation involves cultivating humility, as we acknowledge our complete reliance on God and understand that any good in us comes from Him. It means intentionally focusing on God, shifting our attention away from ourselves and onto His character and Purposes. Our response is one of obedience, living by God’s Word not to earn His love, but as a joyful response to His incredible grace. Finally, it calls us to serve others, following Jesus’ ultimate example of self-sacrifice and love by actively serving those around us.
Christian Counseling Techniques
Christian counselors who utilize the bible as their source of wisdom and help can assist individuals in shifting from a self-focused outlook to one centered on God. They achieve this by helping clients identify false beliefs about themselves, replacing these with biblical truths. Counselors also assist in reframing negative self-talk, helping clients see themselves through the lens of God’s love and acceptance. Part of this process involves exploring God’s unique purpose for each individual, assisting them in discovering their gifts and calling within His divine plan. Furthermore, counselors encourage clients to build a strong support system by connecting with a Christian community for encouragement and accountability. They also foster a spirit of gratitude, helping clients focus on God’s blessings rather than their perceived shortcomings.
The Bible doesn’t dismiss the idea of self-worth but redefines it; our value is found not in ourselves but in our relationship with God. By centering our focus on Christ, we can experience a deep and lasting sense of worth that transcends the fleeting nature of self-esteem. Christian counseling provides valuable support in this transformative journey, helping individuals find their true identity and worth in the eyes of their Creator.
