Biblical Counselor: Faith-Directed Therapy

When you search for a counselor, you will find many approaches that claim to support well-being. Biblical counseling stands apart. Also called Christian or faith-based counseling, this approach uses the Bible as the central source of truth. This article explains biblical counseling, how it differs from other types, and what to expect.

What Is a Biblical Counselor?

Biblical counselors use God’s Word to guide the counseling process. Scripture speaks to all of life and offers direction for every challenge. The Bible is sufficient and addresses belief, behavior, and life’s struggles. Even secular organizations acknowledge that spirituality impacts healing. Biblical counselors know this truth because they witness God’s power to heal.

The Bible gives a clear framework for healing and change. It teaches about the human condition and provides godly solutions.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (MSG) says: “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.”

Biblical counselors train to help clients understand and apply God’s truth to life. They do not rely on human philosophy. While they may reference psychological theories, they never use them as the main source of help. Biblical principles remain central. Only God’s Word and His Spirit can bring real heart change. He aligns struggling hearts with His will and purpose.

A Biblical Counselor: Helping Clients Discover God’s Purpose

Clients often feel deep peace and renewed hope when they learn that God has a plan for them. Their identity shifts. They stop defining themselves by their problems and see themselves through their relationship with Christ.

Biblical Counselor Principles

Several key truths guide Biblical counseling:

  • Sufficiency of Scripture: The Bible gives all the direction needed to know Christ, please God, and live a godly life.
  • Authority of Scripture: The Bible holds the highest authority. Biblical counselors reject theories that conflict with Scripture.
  • Necessity of the Holy Spirit: Lasting heart change comes from the Holy Spirit. Biblical counseling depends on prayer, God’s Word, and His work.
  • Focus on the Heart: Behavior starts in the heart. Biblical counseling addresses root issues for real, lasting change.
  • Christ-Centered Approach: The goal is spiritual growth. Counselors help clients grow in their walk with Christ and honor Him.

Biblical Counselor vs. Other Types of Counselors

Many people confuse different types of counselors. Here’s a brief comparison:

  • Licensed Counselor: These professionals meet state requirements, including graduate education, clinical hours, and exams. They follow strict legal and ethical standards. While some are Christians, their methods often combine faith with secular theories. Always ask how they approach counseling.
  • Biblical Counselor: This counselor uses only the Bible as the main guide. They hold certifications from Biblical counseling groups like ACBC. States do not license them. Their accountability lies with their certifying body and usually their church.
  • Christian Counselor: These licensed professionals integrate Christian faith with secular methods. They use prayer, Scripture, and spiritual tools, but also rely on psychological theories. They operate under state law and follow ethical guidelines.
  • Pastoral Counselor/Chaplain: These clergy members offer spiritual support in churches, hospitals, or the military. They may have some training in counseling, but focus on spiritual care.

The “Gold Mine” Scenario in Faith-Based Counseling

Finding a licensed counselor who adheres firmly to biblical principles can be a rare blessing. This person combines solid clinical training with a deep commitment to Scripture. They address spiritual and emotional needs in a way that honors both science and the Bible, which will lead to deep healing and growth.

The Scope of Treatment by a Biblical Counselor

Biblical counselors help with a wide range of issues, including:

  • Broken marriages
  • Parent-child conflicts
  • Anxiety and fear
  • Depression
  • Addictions
  • Anger
  • Grief
  • Trauma
  • Spiritual struggles

They focus on problems that damage our relationship with God, self, and others.

2 Peter 1:3 says, “His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness…”

What to Expect When You Meet with a Biblical Counselor

During biblical counseling, expect a compassionate and clear approach that includes:

  • A focus on your relationship with God: The counselor will help you see how your walk with God connects to your struggles.
  • Exploration of your heart: Together, you will uncover beliefs, desires, and motivations that affect your behavior.
  • Application of Scripture: You will receive biblical guidance and practical steps, supported by prayer.
  • Personal responsibility: You will take ownership of your choices while depending on God’s grace.

Biblical counseling offers true hope and lasting solutions grounded in God’s unchanging Word.

“Well worth my time and investment.” – Kelly S.

Jane is a real pro. She is kind and caring and was well worth my time and investment.

“Jane helped me to face my emotions of grief” – John B.

Losing my wife was the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. I am a christian and believe in God but, I still struggled. Jane helped me to face my emotions of grief while she encouraged me to invite God to stand right next to me. Her guidance helped me with the grief in a way that kept my wife’s memory alive but also strengthened my relationship with God. The free consultation was good. It was the first step and I’m glad I signed up for counseling.

“Zeroed in on my issues…yet treated me with the utmost respect ” – David S.

Jane is awesome! I’ve had several therapists in my lifetime, all of them good, but she is by far the best. She zeroed in on my issues, kept my feet held to the fire with accountability, yet treated me with the utmost respect that is befitting a Christian ministering to a Christian. I highly recommend her counseling ministry to anyone!
