Understanding Biblical Christian Counseling
You seek a doctor for physical illness; therefore, seek a Christian counselor for mental, emotional, and behavioral issues. Biblical counsel offers profound wisdom—do not neglect it.

The Gap Between Psychology and Christian Counseling
In a world saturated with mental health resources, the search for a counselor who truly integrates faith and clinical expertise can be challenging. Many Christians seek help to navigate a landscape where spiritual needs are often overlooked or minimized. There is a lack of biblically based Christian counseling.
Jane Perkins identified this gap, which resulted in her opening Are You Ready Counseling, LLC. She recognized the need for counselors who acknowledge and integrate biblical principles in therapy. Christians are underserved in the counseling profession. Providing true Biblical counsel to those seeking outpatient counseling therapy and care truly honors Christians as it acknowledges out need for God’s assistance. Biblical Christian counseling answers this need.
Secular psychology, despite its value, disregards this crucial dimension, hindering complete healing for those rooted in faith.
Seeking out a counselor is a sign of strength instead of weakness. (Proverbs 11:14)

I’ve Had a Christian Counselor: What’s the Difference?
– A Matter of Foundational Principles
It’s confusing. “Christian counselor,” “biblical counselor,” and “faith-based counselor” often mean different things. You must do your research to find the right fit. The core beliefs behind each title vary greatly.
Biblical Counselors:
- Their training varies. Some have a bachelor’s degree, some have a master’s from a Christian school, and others have certificates from groups like ACBC or CCEF.
- They often lack formal psychology training, but this doesn’t mean they can not be effective counselors.
- Insurance usually doesn’t cover them. Insurance views this as a “religious practice,” not medical treatment.
- They rely on the Bible for guidance.
- They focus on spiritual change and living by biblical rules.
- Because they are usually not licensed by the State, these biblical counselors generally provide services at churches and non-profit organizations.
Christian Counselors:
- Attending church doesn’t make someone a Christian. True Christian identity is defined by following Christ’s teachings and living a life of faith.
- The minimum educational requirement for licensure is a master’s degree in counseling psychology, clinical mental health counseling, or a related field.
- They are open to discussing your Christian beliefs. Despite this, faith is not considered enough, and you can expect psychological principles to be the leading force that drives the session. Some see a balance between clinical expertise and faith as valuable.
- Usually values a holistic approach. This means that they understand that healing includes both the mind and spirit – but again, it is up to the client to determine if their faith is deep and meaningful or if they are willing to share their personal walk with the God /god they worship.
Faith-Based Counselors (Not Always Christian):
- May focus on a specific faith (e.g., Christianity) or encompass various faith traditions, attempting to create an inclusive environment.
- They use your faith in therapy, based upon your interpretation, but their beliefs can differ.
- Careful research is required to determine their faith perspective and how it influences their counseling approach.
Christian Counselors who Counsel Biblically
- The minimum educational requirement for licensure is a master’s degree in counseling psychology, clinical mental health counseling, or a related field.
- Dedicated Christians who value and apply God’s Word personally to their lives. (They know the Bible and can use it to life’s problems.)
- Dedicated Christians who use the Bible as their primary guide.
- Part of a Christian community.
- Use therapy methods but avoid beliefs that go against the Bible.
- The focus is on healing and change.
- Using biblical teachings in sessions, looking at root problems, and offering faith-based solutions.
- They understand that people have a spiritual side, and mental struggles often connect to spiritual issues.
- They use the Bible as their guide, helping you live by its principles, making them biblically based outpatient counseling.
Online Christian Counseling
You may have concerns:
“Can a counselor truly help me through a phone or computer?”
- Healing from emotional pain requires both knowing and being known. True change occurs through relationships. Therapy provides a safe place to be understood when you feel isolated. It is a temporary space for learning, growth, and practicing new ways of thinking and living.
“Will you understand what I’m going through over a screen?”
- The first session focuses on listening. The beauty of being online is that facial expressions and posture are still very readable. I listen and observe too deeply to understand your unique struggles and their origins. Proverbs 18:13 states, “If one answers before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” I will listen first. Then, we will collaborate to chart the right course forward.
“Will I depend on a stranger forever?”
- I consider myself a solution-focused therapist. I do not want to draw your struggles out as much as you want to address them. However, the duration of therapy varies. Some experience relief after a few sessions; others take more support. The goal remains constant: to facilitate your growth and obtain peace. Christian counseling emphasizes deepening your relationship with God, applying His principles, and seeking His guidance to overcome life’s challenges.
“Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?”
- Let me assure you: it is. As a fully licensed and insurance-recognized therapist, I offer the same professional expertise and compassionate care online as I do in a traditional office setting. The only difference is the setting. Research consistently demonstrates that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of mental health concerns. You will receive the same quality of care, dedication to your well-being, and integration of biblical wisdom, all from the comfort and convenience of your own space.
